One again the new smartphone from the ZenFone Max family by ASUS. It's called ZenFone Max Plus. And the plus value is on the screen that is now less bezel with a ratio of 18: 9. Still carrying the frills "Max" turned out that ASUS made a lot of changes to the ZenFone Max Plus compared to the previous series. The most frontal changes are on the full 18: 9 screen that looks more beautiful.

The screen size is 5.7 inches with HD + resolution. Although the screen is large, this smartphone is certainly still comfortable to hold with one hand because it has a 5.2-inch body. ASUS also provides Max Plus with a 2.5D glass design, so it looks even smaller. Now the fingerprint sensor is shifted to the back and its position is right in the middle, so it is easy to reach the finger. In the area around the screen, we can find a selfie camera positioned above the left screen.

While in the bottom screen, there is a row of navigation buttons, namely Back, Home and Recent Apps. ASUS wrapped this smartphone with metal material without texture. Practical enough to feel slippery when held. In order not to be afraid of falling, it is better to use the soft-case in the sales package. To be more comfortable in the hand, ASUS also packs the four corners of Max Plus with a blunt angle. When used for a long time, such as playing games for example, it still feels comfortable because the hands don't feel like they are pierced.

For those who like to use earphones, a 3.5 mm audio jack can be found at the top, and a micro USB port that supports USB OTG is on the reverse side. There are also two series of holes that flank the micro USB, but only one grill that functions as a speaker, while the other grill just like decoration.

What's interesting about this smartphone is the existence of a triple microSIM and microSD slot. So you don't need to be confused if you want to use two SIM cards and also microSD simultaneously.

ASUS re-provides the smartphone with the ZenUI interface, including ZenFone Max Plus. ZenUI that is loaded is the latest, version 4.0, but still based on Android 7.0 Nougat. So, don't expect that Max Plus will bring Pure Android which only contains applications made by Google. As usual, there are some ASUS default applications that have been installed that are quite useful, such as File Manager, Mobile Manager, Power Master, Selfie Master and WebStorage.

In addition, we can also find compulsory social media applications that are ready to use, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. Other features that we can also enjoy from this smartphone include ZenUI Safeguard to tell others when we are in an emergency.

There are also Easy Mode and Kids Mode special modes if the parents or children use them. Plus there is the Twin Apps feature for duplicate applications and Game Genie for those of you who like to live live while playing.

No less interesting, the security sector has now also increased, where ASUS does not want to lose agile from other vendors.  In addition to the fingerprint behind, ASUS also features face recognition. The speed is quite good, so it's pretty comfortable to use to open lockscreen everyday as an alternative fingerprint.

Because it is still in the Max family, this means that ZenFone Max Plus still relies on batteries as its main selling. Its own capacity is quite decent, which is 4,130 mAh. For the charging process, although it is not exactly fast, but not during the ZenFone Max series before. From the experiments we did, filling from empty to full was not up to three hours.

In charging the first hour, the battery capacity can be charged 43 percent. Run two hours, the battery is 85 percent charged. And only finally fully filled after 2 hours 40 minutes. Meanwhile, for its durability it is above the average of most smartphones, but it is also not arguably superior. For daily usage that is always connected to the internet, this smartphone can last a day with SoT for about six hours.

Because the battery is large, ZenFone Max Plus can also be used as a Powerbank. For this reason, ASUS provides USB Converter cable in its sales package. We try to charge a Meizu M6s battery that has a capacity of 3,000 mAh. With the ZenFone Max Plus battery that is fully charged, only the Meizu M6s battery can be charged as much as 85 percent, or about 2,500 mAh only.

Entering the core of the innards, the ZenFone Max Plus is powered by an integrated MaliT-T860MP2 GPU MediaTek MT6750T chipset, 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. To be used to play games that are quite heavy like Hero Hunter, Tekken, or Rules of Survival is still strong even though of course there are symptoms of a frame drop.

And the visuals presented on the screen are categorized as satisfying. Although the resolution is still HD +, but the screen still looks sharp with bright colors. It doesn't look like a HD resolution screen at all. ZenFone Max Plus comes with dual-camera rear support. The configuration is 16 MP f / 2.0 and 8 MP wide-angle 120 degrees.

For the 16 MP main lens pinned, it also supports auto-focus phase detection. The modes are now simpler, there are only Auto, Beauty, Super Resolution, GIF, Timelapse, Panorama, and most importantly, Pro. Besides being able to use manual focus, we can set the shutter speed from 1/1000 to 10 seconds, ISO from 100 to 1600 and also white balance.

The interface is also not a hassle. If you want to change from a normal lens to a wide lens, just press the icon displayed at the bottom of the screen. And if you pay attention, it turns out that ASUS also provides portrait mode here. Speaking of the results, this rear camera can produce sharp outdoor photos, which are quite satisfying. If you use a wide lens, you can get an angle that is certainly much wider. Optimal to take a walk. And the delicious, the picture is not too distorted or curved than the wide camera owned by LG G6.

But unfortunately when shooting indoor or with light, the quality of the photos dropped quite dramatically. The photo results are far from the details. Especially if you use a wide lens. Likewise with portrait mode, it feels not optimal at all because the camera configuration is not a telephoto lens.

So this portrait mode is purely processed software. The bokeh effect is not neat and automatically feels useless. Turning to the front camera, for those of you who like narcissism, ASUS immersed a 16 MP selfie camera with an f / 2.0 aperture. Certainly also has a complete Beauty feature.

For us, the quality of the photos looks bright, but unfortunately the details are lacking. What's more if selfies are indoors with light. Actually it can be slightly improved using a screen flash. But the condition is, our hands must be really stable.

ZenFone Max Plus successfully brought refreshment through a 18: 9 relief screen and a solid design. This smartphone also comes with a strong battery used all day, even though it's not preserved in its class. The performance is still fun to use to play online games. Plus, there is a dual-camera rear that is quite entertaining to accompany the streets, although it still needs a lot of improvement.
