As one of the cellphone series that has become the ruler in the highest class, the presence of the latest generation of  Galaxy S series is always awaited by users and observers of the development of smartphone technology. Not only that, competitors also certainly listened to Samsung's movement in arming its superior products with a number of the latest features.

The following is our review of smartphones starting the 2018 super phone parade. Samsung chose to be consistent with its choices and not be carried away by the competitors who carry the design of "full screen bangs". In fact, when viewed at a glance, the Samsung Galaxy S9 looks so similar to its Galaxy S8 predecessor.

Even so, Samsung answered the input of users and reviewers in a number of media that highlighted the location of the fingerprint scanner sensor on the Samsung Galaxy S8 by placing this sensor under the lens of the main camera of Samsung Galaxy S9, making it more convenient to reach. In addition, the area of the "forehead" and "chin" at the top and bottom of the screen is also slightly narrower in the current generation of the Galaxy S series when compared to its predecessor.

Although many consider it "unsuccessful", especially outside the American and Korean markets, but Samsung seems to still  have great hopes for the features of their virtual assistant, Bixby. This can be seen from Samsung's decision to maintain a dedicated button to access this feature on the left side, accompanying the volume control button.

In addition, the 3.5mm audio jack hole also survives. This accommodates the presence of the AKG headset that Samsung included in the Galaxy S9 sales package. For the first generation galaxy S9, Samsung provides 3 color choices, namely Coral Blue, as we tested, Midnight Black and Lilac Purple.

Still using Super AMOLED panels with QHD + resolution, Samsung also doesn't seem to develop technology in the screen sector - which they call an infinity display - significantly, or maybe they don't even develop at all from those used on the Galaxy S8. It is difficult to develop something that is close to perfection, so it is very understandable. we don't even have screen- related complaints on this samrtphone.

This cellphone screen still displays excellent sharpness. While the brightness, contrast and saturation can be adjusted to the user's taste through the Screen Mode setting that provides a selection of Adaptive displays, AMOLED cinema, AMOLED photo and Basic. The Adaptive display option will automatically make the screen optimize the range of colors, saturation and sharpness of the image according to the graphic character that is displayed on the screen.

As a flagship product, it's only natural that Samsung introduces new features in the security sector. If Apple relies on Face ID on the iPhone X, then Samsung championed the variation of its biometric screen lock feature then collaborated on the latest features called Intelligent Scan.

Intelligent Scan is actually just a combination of two screen lock options that Samsung had previously had on the Galaxy S8, namely iris scanner and face recognition. This feature will analyze the face seen by the front camera and lighting conditions around the user, then the system will determine the most appropriate screen locking method between the two to use.

If intelligent scan is activated, after the user turns on the screen, the system will first use the face recognition method. If this initial authentication fails, the phone will immediately scan the iris. If the condition is not so ideal for both scans, the system will combine the two to open the screen. Take it easy even though the process seems very complicated, but all these processes run very instant.

Even though it sounds sophisticated, we feel that there is a problem, especially in the iris scanner. Because several times the Samsung Galaxy S9 that we tested, failed to scan when the eyes were blocked by glasses. This is certainly a little inconvenient when you want to immediately access the screen, because occasionally the process of unlocking the screen becomes added to by opening the glasses first.

But clearly there are improvements made by Samsung on the face recognition method after many reports that this feature can easily be "deceived" by two-dimensional face images on the S8. we try to fool this feature by printing face images that have been registered in the face recognition feature. As a result, the S9 we tested succeeded not to be deceived.

Actually there are also other reports that were quite horrendous last year after a hacker from Germany named "Starbug" successfully deceived the GalaxyS8 iris scanner. Unfortunately we haven't had time to re-invent the trick because of the limitations of tools and time.

Tagline "The Camera. Reimagined. "It seems enough to explain that Samsung is doing a big development in the camera sector for this latest flagship product. Samsung uses ISOCELL Fast 2L3 sensor with Super Speed Dual Pixel technology. Unlike common camera sensors which only have 2 layers of silicon, Samsung's latest sensor has 3 layers of silicon.

The first silicon layer is a pixel array layer which is responsible for capturing information about the light entering the lens and turning it into an electrical signal. This electrical signal is processed into a digital code by the second layer called the analog logic layer.

Well, the key to Samsung's latest sensor excellence is in the third layer. Generally digital codes from analog logic layers are sent directly to the processor and then stored in the cellphone RAM, while on sensors that are owned by S9, Samsung adds DRAM dedicated specifically to storing images processed by these 2 layers (pixel array layer and analog logic layer).

This allows the sensor to hold more information in a faster time before sending it to the processor. The existence of the DRAM layer with the 2 gigabit LPDDR4 specification includes increasing noise reduction capability in shooting in dark spaces with multi frame processing technology and enabling the cellphone to capture more frames in one second leading to super slow motion video recording capabilities.

Not only is the sensor the camera brain that is developed optimally by Samsung. The outermost part of the camera sector, the lens is also strengthened. With Samsung Galaxy S9 +, Samsung Galaxy S9 became the first cellphone to have dual aperture technology. The 12MP censored main camera that the Galaxy S9 has is paired with a lens that has two levels of openings at once, F / 1.5 and F / 2.4.

For those who don't know, simply the aperture value or lens opening or f-stop is a value that explains how much the diameter of the light hole is open to the camera sensor. The lens aperture works like a pupil in the human eye, will enlarge to allow more light to enter when the lighting conditions are dim and vice versa will decrease during bright lighting conditions.

It's just that if a cellphone camera only has one choice of lens openings, then the amount of light entering the sensor will be determined by the shutter speed. Because Galaxy S9 and S9 + have two levels of openings, the system will determine which openings are used according to the lighting conditions around the object.

F / 2.4 will be used if the lighting conditions are bright or sufficient and F / 1.5 will be used when the camera is used for shooting in dim and even dark areas. Users can also choose which one is used in pro (manual) mode. Not only determines the intensity of the incoming light, the lens opening also affects the magnitude of the focus area or what is known in terms of photography as depth of field (DoF). Large lens openings (in this case F / 1.5) have a narrower depth of field, while smaller lens openings bring greater depth of field. Simply put, a large lens opening allows the camera to make photos with a more powerful bokeh effect.

The latest feature that also appears in the Samsung Galaxy S9 camera sector is AR Emoji. This feature allows users to create emojis with their own face characters. This emoji is in .gif format so it can be easily and lightly sent via the messaging application.

Unfortunately, in our opinion the choice of physical shape and hair is still less varied. But we chose to tolerate and understand it considering this feature has only made its debut on Galaxy S9 and S9 +. It would be nice if you could choose an avatar character with a choice of physical shapes such as fat or thin, and also more choices of hairstyles that are not too k-pop style or even hijab choices for women in this AR Emoji feature in the future. Not only is the lack of choice to personalize the avatar characters created, we also feel that this feature still has weaknesses in detecting facial expressions so that the avatars displayed sometimes do not show the same expression that the user does in front of the camera.

Still in the camera sector, no less interesting is the Super Slow Motion feature. This feature allows users to record videos that slow the movement of objects in the video up to 30 times slower. Because the speed of the camera captures light in this mode, the lighting conditions around the object must be really bright. Besides that, light sources should not be arbitrary. The sun is the best lighting source for this mode, so this feature should be used outdoors.

Even if you want to make a video in the room, then the lamp should be used to have a high frequency so it does not appear to blink in slow motion video. In this mode, the camera appears to capture a narrower angle than the normal video recorder.

With manual selection in super slow-mo mode, users can specify certain moments that they want to slow down when recording. Or if you choose auto, the system will apply slow motion if motion is detected in the area marked by the user. This feature will convert a moment of 0.2 seconds in length to 6 seconds in length, so that simple movements such as waving long hair or pouring water will look dramatic.

Not the S-Series, if Samsung is not maximal in providing the features carried by the cellphone in its flagship class. Most of the Galaxy S9 mainstay features such as dual aperture, super slow motion and AR Emoji are indeed centered on the camera sector, but that does not mean that other sectors escaped Samsung's attention. Such as collaboration with AKG for the audio sector both on embedded stereo speakers and the headset included in the sales package. Not to mention the general superior performance, even the best available on the market today.
