Review of the Samsung Galaxy A30 - Infinity Display with affordable prices

Following the Galaxy M Series that debuted this year, Samsung presents the newest member of the Galaxy A Series which has had a longer story since 2014. The series of Galaxy A Series continued with the presence of 4 latest variants at once. The four newest variants of the Galaxy A Series are Galaxy A50, A30, A20 and A10.

The long list represents the wide segment of the price that is filled by this series of Galaxy A Series. Naturally, because one of the reasons for the presentation of these phones is to fill the space left by the discontinued Galaxy J Series.

Design

As is known, Samsung is the only allergic vendor to adopt a bangs screen design. This lasted at least until the end of last year, when Samsung introduced a design alternative to its flagship Infinity Display. At that time Samsung introduced a new design called infinity-U, infinity-V and infinity-O.

After applying the first screen on the Galaxy M Series, Samsung also continued adopting the design of bangs on lower middle class phones, including the Samsung Galaxy A30 spesification. The difference between the Kellytech Galaxy M20 is the previous test using the infinity-V design, while this phone is equipped with infinity-U, which actually only has very minimal differences in the shape of the bangs.

Behind the back side, Kellytech was reminded of the design of the Galaxy M20 that Kellytech tested some time ago. Samsung put the dual camera lens as the main camera of this phone in the upper left area along with the flash light, as well as the fingerprint scanner arranged vertically with the Samsung logo in the middle area.

The difference seems to be the color choices of the Samsung Galaxy A30. This phone looks more luxurious than the Galaxy M20 which only displays flat colors (plain), while this phone has a more attractive color offer with a dynamic sparkle effect, especially in blue units like the Kellytech test. The fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy A30 looks similar in color to other areas on the back, surrounded by metal accents that make it easily recognizable by the tip of the user's index finger.

Kellytech was also impressed with how thin this cellphone was despite carrying a high capacity beterai that reached 4000mAh. Samsung has equipped this phone with USB Type-C connectivity placed on the bottom along with a 3.5mm audio port, mic hole and loudspeaker grill.

While the right side is occupied by the volume regulator and the power button. And on the opposite side, there is a SIM card tray capable of loading 2 nano SIMs along with a microSD memory card. The back side is shaped slightly rounded at the edges to feel ergonomic in the grip even though the screen is quite large.

Infinity-U

Late last year, precisely in early November, Samsung announced that it was developing a new screen design called infinity-U, infinity-V and infinity-O.

Infinity-Om debuted on the Galaxy A8s, followed by M20 and M10 pairs carrying Infinity-V. Until then the Infinity-U design was present on the Galaxy M30 which was continued on this cellphone and nearby A50 siblings.

Although the price difference that is owned by this phone is quite close to the Galaxy M20 but in the screen sector there is a significant difference in this phone, which is the use of Samsung's Super AMOLED display panel. This screen panel has a more vivid (bright) color display characteristics and thicker black colors than the IPS panel. In addition, with the use of themes and dark wallpapers, users can save power more optimally.

The Super AMOLED panel also allows this phone to have the Always On Display (AOD) feature that will display time information and notifications when the screen is locked. Interestingly, the AOD feature on the One UI owned by the A30 provides a very diverse selection of watch faces. There are at least 16 types of clock displays for the AOD feature by default. Users can even download other AOD display options from Galaxy Themes. There are hundreds of choices ranging from free to paid.

OS and UI

Like the latest series of Samsung's flagship, the Galaxy S10 series that uses a combination of Android Pie and Samsung One UI, this cellphone also uses the same composition in the software sector.

There are a number of significant differences from the appearance of the latest Samsung interface compared to the Samsung Experience which is widely used in the previous generation Galaxy family.

Among the more fresh icon designs, also a more friendly menu arrangement for one hand operation, where almost all important choices from the default menu can be reached by the thumb. Like for example the setting options in the Settings menu only fill 2/3 of the bottom of the screen so that all options in the Settings menu can be reached by the thumb. A similar design is also presented on a number of menus and default applications starting from the Gallery, Bixby Home, Messages, Contacts and others.

One UI also brings the Night Mode feature that changes the interface interface on the majority of the menu / default applications One UI becomes dark in color, including in the Settings, Browser, Calendar and even notification panel. Not only is it more friendly to the eyes for dark or night use, this feature will also make the A30's power consumption far more efficient considering the panel used for the screen is Super AMOLED.

Nevertheless there is still a touch of Samsung which was previously also present on the Samsung Experience mainly used by the Galaxy M20 that Kellytech tested before. Like for example, when a user activates face recognition (biometric) security features, then every time he turns on the screen when the cellphone is locked, a light effect moves on the edge of the notch or the front camera area as a marker that the front camera of the phone is scanning the user's face. .

Likewise, when using the self timer feature to take pictures using the front camera. Besides the numbers counting down, an animation appears on the edge of the notch that shows the remaining time before the photo was taken.

Hardware and Battery

Variant for the Samsung Galaxy A30 with 4GB of memory capacity for RAM and 64GB for internal storage capacity. Reportedly globally there are other variants of the Galaxy A30 that come with 3GB / 32GB memory combination options.

Behind the kitchen runway there is a similarity between the Galaxy A30 with the Galaxy M20 that comes first. The smartphone also carries the Exynos 7 Series SoC (7904) which has an 8 core CPU with a bigLITTLE configuration, precisely 2 Cortex®-A73-based 1.8GHz-based cores, and 6 Cortex®-A53 based 1.6GHz cores. With this configuration, processing on this cellphone is fairly efficient in power consumption. This certainly makes the battery power on this cellphone run out longer, especially if used moderately (not too often playing heavy games).

Speaking of power, although the battery capacity of this cellphone (4000mAh) is not as big as that of the Galaxy M20 (5000mAh) but with Super AMOLED panels, the power efficiency of this cellphone cannot be underestimated. After moderate use, which spends a lot of time streaming Youtube, monitoring social media and browsing for 22 hours, the power on this cellphone is still 58%.

Interestingly, this large capacity battery, fortunately has been supported with a 15 Watt fast charging feature Adaptive Fast Charging and of course, Samsung has included a charger adapter with this feature in the sales package.

Camera

Different from the Galaxy A50 which is the most superior variant of this latest A Series series which features 3 cameras on the back. This phone only carries 2 cameras as its main camera.

The difference is in one of the camera sensors that is removed, namely a sensor that functions as a detector of depth (sensor). Yup, this phone only carries a 16MP main sensor with an F / 1.7 lens opening and a 5MP companion sensor that is paired with an ultrawide (12mm) lens with an F / 2.2 aperture.

With the help of this ultrawide camera, users can capture photos with an area of view reaching 123 °. Very useful for photographing wide landscapes, multi-storey architecture to group photos (group photos) in a narrow area. To move between the main sensor and the ultrawide sensor, the user just has to choose one of the icons with pine trees in the bottom area of the viewfinder (in portrait orientation).

No less interesting is the Scene Optimizer feature which is nothing but an AI-based feature (Artificial Intelligence) that detects what objects are being photographed, then applies the appropriate settings to optimize the photo results according to the object being targeted. The Samsung Galaxy A30 is claimed to be able to recognize 19 different categories of objects, ranging from food, pets, self portraits, flowers, natural scenery, texts and so on.

Although not carrying a camera with the function of the depth sensor, in fact the Samsung Galaxy A30 also features the Live Focus feature which is a mainstay of Samsung. Live Focus Mode can be selected directly from 5 main modes (Panorama, Pro, Live Focus, Photo and Video) on the camera's main feature interface.

For the front camera, this phone carries a 16MP sensor, with a choice of Live Focus, Photo and Video modes, as well as Filter, Beauty, AR Emoji, AR Stikers, Stamp and HDR features.

Conclusion

Samsung's decision to stop the production of the Galaxy J Series and fill the position it left with the Galaxy A Series seems interesting. Because of this, the Galaxy A Series will serve a wider segment of the market, from the Mid-Low class to the Mid High Segment (even close to the premium segment).

No less interesting, the prices of products made by the Korean manufacturer which previously often seemed to be "overprice" when compared to products with a level specification, now feels more "reasonable". Like for example the Samsung Galaxy A30 which when compared to competitor products in the same price class still offers attractive packages. Plus points, users get quality assurance and after-sales service in the big name of the market leader.
