Review of Samsung Galaxy M20 - Equipped with a large battery

Samsung closes 2018 and opens this year with attractive maneuvers in the middle segment. After the end of last year Samsung initiated a new trend of hollow screens through the Galaxy A8s, the smartphone market leader then enriched its portfolio by presenting the Galaxy M-Series.

Gait series samrtphone that will fill the middle segment is opened with the presence of pairs of Galaxy M10 and M20. The variant of the Galaxy M20 is the first to be released to the Indonesian market. Kellytech also had the opportunity to directly test the performance of this phone. Here's the review.

As a new member of the Samsung Galaxy big family, the Galaxy M20 brings a fresh style without leaving a "design language" that has become a feature of the products made by the ruler of this market.

The face, this phone is different from previous Galaxy products by adopting the Infinity-V screen design. This screen design is the latest from the Samsung Galaxy family, after being popular with Infinity Display on some middle-class products to the top, and has just introduced Infinity-O through the Galaxy A8s.

While if it is reversed to the back side, the characteristic of the Samsung Galaxy is quite clearly visible on the physical M20. Samsung put the dual camera lens as the main camera of this phone in the upper left area along with the flash light, as well as the fingerprint scanner arranged vertically with the Samsung logo in the middle area. This arrangement is reminiscent of several products from the latest Galaxy A-Series line-up such as A9, A7, A8S and A6S.

Only, the material used by Samsung on this M20 is polycarbonate plastic which is given a glossy finish, not glass like some of the A-series occupants mentioned earlier. With a glossy finish, the back of the phone remains a magnet for fingerprint stains, as well as glass material.

Although priced at less than 3 million rupiah, Samsung has provided this phone with USB Type-C connectivity. And as long as Kellytech remembers, this phone is the cheapest Galaxy product that carries a USB Type-C port.

This port is on the bottom side with a 3.5mm audio port, mic hole and loudspeaker grill. While the right side is occupied by the volume regulator and the power button. And on the opposite side, there is a SIM card tray capable of loading 2 nano SIMs along with a microSD memory card.

Infinity-V

Return to the screen sector specifically. As mentioned earlier that this phone (and Galaxy M10) is the first Galaxy product to carry the "new" Infinity-V display design.

Indeed, Infinity-V is a minimalist notch-shaped design of water droplets right in the middle area of the upper side of the screen. Although new to the Samsung Galaxy family, but such designs are actually already popularized by other manufacturers such as Oppo and Vivo.

With a screen size of 6.3 inches and an Infinity-V screen design, the front side of the Samsung Galaxy M20 is dominated by a screen area with a ratio of 19.5: 9. Providing a special attraction for this phone in the eyes of prospective users who like to enjoy video content via mobile phones.

Moreover, this cellphone has pocketed Widevine L1. Which means this phone has been able to play video content through streaming services such as Google Play Movies, Netflix, HOOQ and the like in high resolution or more than 720p.

For information, Widevine is one of the digital rights management (DRM) platforms, which serves to prevent piracy of videos in streaming services. Widevine protects video content with 3 levels of security named L3, L2, and L1. Well, devices that have streaming capabilities must be certified to meet the L1 specifications in order to enjoy HD video content on streaming services such as Netflix.

This cellphone uses PLS panel (Plane to Line Switching) which is a result of refinement of IPS technology (In Panel Switching). This panel is manufactured by Samsung and is claimed to have a brightness (brightness) of 10% higher, wider viewing angle, and better image quality in a more economical production budget compared to IPS panels.

By default this phone carries an Android system with version 8.1 (Oreo). But as Kellytech preached before, this cellphone has been confirmed by Samsung to be included in the Galaxy product list which will get an update to the newer Android version, namely Pie (9.0) in August. Although it's quite far from the time of its launch, at least this news is quite a relief.

Oreo on this mobile is presented with the Samsung Experience interface (UI) version 9.5. Even so, the Samsung Experience presentation seems to have received special modifications to accommodate the dewdrop notch design that this phone has. Like for example, when a user activates face recognition (biometric) security features, then every time he turns on the screen when the cellphone is locked, a light effect moves on the edge of the notch or the front camera area as a marker that the front camera of the phone is scanning the user's face. . Likewise, when using the self timer feature to take pictures using the front camera. Besides the numbers counting down, an animation appears on the edge of the notch that shows the remaining time before the photo was taken.

Beyond that, another difference from the Samsung Experience is this cellphone if compared to the higher series Galaxy series such as the A-Series, S-Series or Note Series, it appears in the absence of the Bixby feature on the M20.

As usual, by default Samsung Experience activates the distribution of Homescreen and App Drawer. But for users who prefer to display all applications directly on the Homescreen, options are available to do so in the Settings menu> Display> Home Screen> Front Screen Layout.

Hardware and Battery

Indeed, the M20 comes in 2 choices of memory capacity, namely 4/64GB and 3 / 32GB, but the one officially presented by Samsung Indonesia is the 3 / 32GB variant.

The phone is equipped with the Exynos 7 Series SoC (7904) which has an octacore CPU with a bigLITTLE configuration, precisely 2 Cortex®73 based cores with 1.8GHz speed, and 6 Cortex®A53 based 1.6GHz cores. With this configuration, processing on this cellphone is fairly efficient in power consumption. This certainly makes the battery power on this cellphone run out longer, especially if used moderately (not too often playing heavy games).

Speaking of power, this is one of the main superior features of this Galaxy M20, because the phone is equipped with a 5000mAh capacity battery, which is very large for the size of a 2 million class mobile phone with a middle class processor. On the first day of Kellytech with M20, 36% of the battery power remained after being active for 1 day plus 9 hours.

This large-capacity battery, fortunately has been supported with fast charging features and, more encouragingly, Samsung has included a charger adapter with this feature in the sales package.

Camera

In the camera sector, this phone is equipped with dual sensors on the back side, each with 13 MP resolution with an F / 1.9 and 5 MP aperture that is supported with an Ultra Wide lens to produce photos with a wider viewing angle. To switch between these two sensors, the user just needs to slide the switch with a pine tree, which is on the bottom side of the viewfinder in portrait orientation.

For the choice of modes, Samsung provides the Automatic option, Stickers, Continuous Shot, Live Focus, Beauty, Pro and Panorama.

But there are different features of the Live Focus on this phone when compared to the same features in previous Galaxy products. Live focus should allow users to adjust blur to photos before and after photos are taken, not working on this phone.

With this Live Focus feature, users will only get photos with a bokeh effect that cannot be adjusted before the blur level, especially after the photo is taken. And even then if the main object is in the form of a human, while if the object is other than human, a statement will appear "Cannot apply the blurry effect. There are no faces detected. "

Indeed, Samsung claims that this phone has the Scene Optimizer feature, which is a feature that will detect what objects are trying to be photographed and then automatically apply the appropriate settings to the object for optimal results. But unlike other Galaxy products that also carry similar features, on this phone there is no option to activate or deactivate the Scene Optimizer feature in camera settings. There is also no icon that represents what object is being targeted (for example a flower icon when aiming at a flower object). Kellytech has doubted the claim that this cellphone really carries this feature.

Switch to the front camera. 8 MP sensor is available with 3 choices of modes, including Live Focus, Selfie and Stickers. The problem with the Live Focus feature on the selfie camera is still the same as what happened to the main camera. For matters of videography, both the front camera and the main camera behind both have the capability to record video in a maximum Full HD resolution.

Although some features do not work according to expectations and claims, Samsung Galaxy M20 cameras both behind and in front can produce photos whose quality does not disappoint, even though they are not of sufficient quality to enter the "very satisfying" category in the 2 million price sector.

Conclusion

As a market leader who has a great opportunity to set standards, Samsung seems to be carried away in the current 2 million price class by following the minimalist bangs screen trend. However, this can be very understandable considering that Samsung also needs to strengthen its middle class price line to continue to maintain its position.

Unfortunately, the price tag embedded for this cellphone in the country is not quite tempting, because in a similar price range, competitors offer hardware specifications that seem more promising, for example larger memory capacity and higher processor speeds.
