Review of Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo - Dual Camera with More Economical

Completing the J Series, Samsung presents the Galaxy J7 Duo as the second cellphone that uses a dual main camera in the Galaxy series with the target of the middle-aged young user. Although it has the same superior features, but there are some significant differences in this phone when compared to the Galaxy J7 + which is a Dual-Cam pioneer on the J Series.

Kellytech must give credit to Samsung that is consistent with the Galaxy J series design style. Physically, at first glance Kellytech immediately recognizes the dynamic identity of the Galaxy J series on this cellphone. On paper, this phone has a lighter weight than the Galaxy J7 + with a difference only 6 grams. Even so, the main material forming the body of this cellphone can be said to be "different class" with its predecessor. Unfortunately not in a good sense.

Instead of maintaining aluminum material that seems solid and premium like the Galaxy J7 +, Samsung provides this smartphone with polycarbonate plastic material. Even so, the build quality is of course still good, like other Samsung phones.

Samsung also gives users access to the battery through a backdoor that can be opened and installed. For mobile phones in the class price of close to 4 million, easy access to batteries so that they can be easily replaced like this, indeed it has begun to be rarely adopted. Make it unique but in a way that actually gives the impression of "old school". Now it is certainly very difficult to find cellphone users who carry a spare battery everywhere, because the function has been replaced by Powerbank, so backdoor access to a battery like this is no longer needed.

In addition to the battery, from the back door access, users can find 2 SIM card slots with micro-SIM format and a memory card slot that can accommodate microSD with a capacity of 256GB. Below the screen there are 2 capacitive buttons, namely back and recent apps that flank a physical home button. This home button doubles as a fingerprint scanner. While on the back side there is a pair of main camera lenses that stick out, along with flash lights and loudspeakers that flank them.

The Kellytech test unit is blue with a matte finish that feels "grippy" in the grip. In addition, cellphones with doff style like this are of course safer from the stains caused by fingerprints.

Super AMOLED screen

Although using the Super AMOLED panel, Samsung chose to keep using the 16: 9 screen ratio which again made this phone seem outdated amidst the onslaught of bezelless phones which generally have a screen ratio of 18: 9.

Back compared to its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy J7 +, this phone actually shares the same screen size (5.5 inches). It's just that the resolution is inferior. J7 + has Full HD resolution, while this cellphone is only limited to HD levels. This automatically makes the pixel density level on this phone screen lower than J7 +.

Because each pixel on the Super AMOLED panel can be lit independently, this panel is known to have black characters that are very thick and more energy efficient, especially if users are good at maximizing them by choosing dark colored themes and wallpapers. These advantages are also usually used for the Always-On Display feature, unfortunately this is not the case with these phones that do not have these features.

The 5.5-inch screen is certainly a sufficient size to enjoy multimedia content, especially with favorite movies or video clips. Interestingly, Outdoor mode settings are available which will make the phone screen very bright for outdoor use on a very sunny day.

Oreo and Samsung Experience

In the software or software sector, this cellphone has adopted the latest version of Android Oreo 8.0 which is wrapped with Samsung Experience 9.0.

In the initial setup, users will be asked to choose what applications are installed from the recommended list of applications made by Samsung and Google. If you select all available applications, the system will download these applications when connected to a wifi network. The amount is quite large with a size of almost 400MB, so users must be patient enough to wait for the process before being able to use this phone to the full.

Even so, the basic applications of Google and Samsung, such as Google Now, Chrome, Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Calendar, Settings, Contact, Camera, Gallery and a number of other standard applications can be directly used when the phone is running fully.

In the leftmost panel on the Homescreen, there is Bixby Home which displays the latest updates from a number of applications such as LinkedIn, YouTube, Gallery, Facebook, Weather, Samsung Health, Flipboard and others.

To display a list of applications or the App Drawer, users just have to swipe up or down on one of the Homescreen panels. If you are familiar with the old way, users can display a special App Drawer icon on the dock at the bottom of the screen by activating it in the Settings menu> Display> Home screen> Apps button.

Maximum With Samsung Account

There are several features that users can maximize if they have a Samsung Account. Among them are Samsung Pass, with this feature users can save their username and password from various social media accounts or applications that are owned and synchronize them to Samsung Account. Furthermore, when you want to log in to a saved account, the user does not need to manually type the username and password and just scan the fingerprint.

In addition, there is also a Samsung Cloud feature, which allows users to synchronize data stored on the phone to Samsung's cloud storage room. For this phone, users are given 15GB of cloud storage space that can be synchronized to various Samsung Galaxy phones that have Samsung Cloud features such as A, Note and S Series.

With this phone, users who like to read are quite spoiled by the presence of the S Lime application that provides free e-newspapers and e-magazines for Samsung Account owners. And the most interesting is the Secure Folder application. With this application users can hide files and applications that are confidential and private. Not only that, users can even duplicate desired applications such as chat applications. The duplicated application can then be stored in a secure folder so that only cellphone owners can access it.

Dual-Cam and Live Focus

The camera has become one of the sectors that Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo has highlighted on this phone. Behind there is a dual camera with a 13 MP + 5 MP sensor configuration which both have an opening value of f / 1.9. This dual camera provides Live Focus capabilities as it first appeared on the 2018 version of the Samsung Galaxy A8 and A8 + selfie cameras.

With the Live Focus feature, users can determine the desired bokeh effect before the photo is captured. How long the depth-of-field or the area of the focus area will be directly presented in the viewfinder.

The front camera allows users to create photos with a bokeh effect thanks to the presence of the selfie focus feature, but of course the blur or blur cannot be adjusted. From the photos that Kellytech took, the main object and the background appeared to be very neatly separated, as if actually taken using a lens with a large diaphragm.

Beauty features are also provided for the front camera. Without automatic settings, the user must manually adjust the skin tone, facial fading and eye size in this mode.

The AR sticker feature is also an attraction that Samsung has pinned on the camera sector of this phone. Very reasonable considering the segment of millennial young users being targeted by the Galaxy J7 Duo. This AR Sticker feature is available for selfie cameras and main cameras.

Besides auto mode, this camera sector has Pro mode, Panorama, Continuous shot, HDR, Night, Sports and Sound & shot for rear camera. While for selfie cameras, Selfie mode, Wide Selfie, and Sound & shot are provided.

Return to Exynos

If its predecessor, the J7 + uses a MediaTek chipset. Samsung entrusts its own chipset manufacturer to arm this cellphone.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo uses Exynos 7 series with the 7885 model which is also used by Samsung for Galaxy A8 and A8 +. The difference is, the maximum speed of each core that is owned by this cellphone is inferior to that of the two siblings. Even so, its performance in the Antutu Benchmark application shows a slight difference with the Samsung Galaxy A8. This phone managed to score 97192, not far from the Galaxy A8 which when Kellytech test scored 98 thousand. Though in terms of price both have a difference of almost Rp3 million.

For storage, provided 32GB of internal space that can be expanded with additional microSD memory cards up to 256GB. Moreover, a special microSD slot is available without having to share functions with the SIM card slot.

Bringing a large screen certainly requires a large power supply, unfortunately this phone is only equipped with batteries with 3000 mAh of power capacity. That too without fast charging or fast charging technology.

Conclusion

Dual cameras have become one of the features whose popularity has been increasing lately. In the Samsung mid-range product line, there are only these phones with the Galaxy J7 + and Samsung Galaxy A6 + (2018) which have dual main cameras available on the market. Compared to the two siblings, this cellphone is the most attractive choice for prospective users who make prices as one of the main considerations in buying a cellphone.

On the other hand, of course there are some disadvantages of this cellphone when compared to the two phones, especially in design. Even though design should be an important sector for the millennial young user segment that is the target of the Galaxy J series.
