Review of Samsung Galaxy A6 (2018): Cheaper for Middle Class

Samsung Galaxy A6 and Samsung Galaxy A6 + (2018), as we know, officially floored in Indonesia after it was launched last May in Uluwatu, Bali. In the previous edition we discussed Galaxy A6 + (2018), now it's the turn of the 'sister' to be reviewed.

Because it has been reviewed, you may already know many things about the Samsung Galaxy A6 + (2018). Then there is nothing wrong if we look at what the Galaxy A6 (2018) offers, including anything that makes it different from the Galaxy A6 + (2018).

Design

As the name implies, it is only distinguished by the 'plus' appendage on the Galaxy A6 +, except for its smaller dimensions, the design of the Galaxy A6 has no difference with the 'predecessor'.

As is known, the Galaxy A6 + (2018) which comes with a 6.0-inch screen with a ratio of 18.5: 9 has dimensions of 160.2 x 75.7 x 7.9 mm. While the Galaxy A6 (2018) which has a 5.6-inch screen dimensions is also slightly smaller, namely 149.9 x 70.8 x 7.7 mm.

Just like the Galaxy A6 +, the younger brother is also packaged by combining a screen panel on the front and metal material that covers the rear area and the sides of this smartphone. Thanks to the aspect ratio of 18.5: 9, the Galaxy A6 has a slim profile. This makes the Galaxy A6 not only more compact when held, when it is inserted into the pocket it is not too disturbing because of its slim dimensions.

The component layout problem, at the bottom of the screen is fairly clean because there are no components perched here. Conversely, at the top of the screen components such as the front camera sensor, receiver (speaker), proximity sensor, and LED Flash light.

Turning to the right side, here we will find the power button side by side with the speaker hole. While in the opposite area, the side section is found with a volume rocker button side by side with the SIM slot. Please note, the SIM slot embedded in the Galaxy A6 has two parts. In the first tray located above this is the slot used for SIM 1, while in the other slot is the place for SIM 2 and microSD cards. Other components, such as the audio jack and micro-USB port are placed on the bottom side of the segment.

At the back, you can see the camera sensor perched and the fingerprint sensor with the flash LED beside it. On the top and bottom sides of the smartphone antenna line that adorns the area behind this smartphone.

Infinity Display

Just like the Galaxy A6 +, this smartphone has adopted the Infinity Display concept screen and has adopted a Super AMOLED type screen. Although using the same type and ratio, of course between the Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6 + also brings a number of differences in the display sector.

From its size, the screen of the Galaxy A6 (2018) is smaller as well as the resolution. The screen of the Galaxy A6 (2018) has a 5.6-inch diagonal with a resolution of 720 x 1480 pixels. While the A6 + (2018) is more spacious with a size of 6.0 inches, the resolution is 1080 x 2220 pixels.

With a smaller resolution, the screen of the Galaxy A6 is also inferior to the Galaxy A6 + in terms of density. When the screen of the Galaxy A6 + (2018) is able to emit content with a density reaching 441 ppi, while the Galaxy A6 screen has a density of 294 ppi.

Talk about the performance of the screen, as from its responsiveness, the Galaxy A6 is classified as very good. It's just for its multitouch capabilities, based on testing the screen of the Galaxy A6 can be accessed simultaneously as many as 5 points, in contrast to the Galaxy A6 + (2018) which can be accessed up to 10 points.

In terms of appearance, the Galaxy A6 (2018) even though it has been presented with the full screen concept, but still appears with a sharp angle to me, different from the screen angle on the Galaxy A6 + (2018) looks blunt or rounded.

OS and Interface

The Galaxy A6 already carries the Android 8.0 Oreo operating system that is enhanced with the 9.0 Samsung Experience. You could say, in this sector between the Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6 + (2018) there is no significant difference.

In general, for you loyal users of Samsung devices, you may already be familiar with what is displayed on Samsung Experience. Where besides appearing fresher, the user interface adopted by the Galaxy A6 feels quite simple. The App Drawer icon does not appear to be visible on the default version, it can be displayed by accessing Settings> Display> Home Screen> Apps> Button. Here there are two choices that we can choose, namely Show Apps Button or Hide Apps Button.

Applications or default features offered by Galaxy A6 (2018) are also quite a lot. For example the Bixby feature, an intelligent assistant based on artificial intelligence has also been pinned on the Galaxy A6 (2018) which offers a number of capabilities, namely as Bixby Home, Bixby Vision and Bixby Reminder. For Bixby vision, with this feature the user is facilitated to search for various visual information, translate text into various languages or find reference places when traveling. To access Bixby is quite easy, where we simply sweep the screen horizontally from left to right.

Besides Bixby, we are also spoiled with a number of typical applications from Samsung such as Samsung Health, Samsung Connect, S Lime, Samsung Max, and so on. One that is unfortunate, based on observations, is that the Galaxy A6 did not find the Always on Display feature, even though this feature is on the Galaxy A6 + (2018).

Not unlike the Galaxy A6 +, in the Samsung Galaxy A6 there are also a number of biometric-based security features, such as fingerprint sensors and face recognition. As the name implies with the Face Recognition feature we can quickly and easily open the screen, it's as easy as taking a selfie or scanning a finger.

In its use, both the fingerprint and face recognition security features when you want to be activated, users are required to perform a standard security backup, namely by using PIN, password, and pattern. This procedure is actually a backup, where if in certain circumstances the biometric-based security feature does not work, we still can still access the smartphone by using standard security features, both in the form of PIN, pattern, or password.

In addition to the biometric security features discussed above, in the Settings menu> Biometrics and Security there are also other security facilities, including Google Play Protect, Find My Mobile, and Samsung Pass.

Camera

Due to the cheaper price tag, it is natural that the Galaxy A6 is found to have different specifications and tends to be below the Galaxy A6 + (2018). Included in this case is in the photography sector. The more expensive Galaxy A6 + comes with a 16 MP dual-camera (f / 1.7) + 5 MP (f / 1.9) feature.

As for the Galaxy A6 (2018) there is no dual-camera sensor found, both for the front and rear cameras. Details, the Galaxy A6 is packed with 16 MP rear camera features (f / 1.7) with a number of attributes such as PDAF, LED flash, check quality, Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, panorama, and HDR.

A number of facilities are presented in the Galaxy A6 camera interface. On the left side, sequentially from top to bottom menu icons are presented for Camera Settings, activate / deactivate the flash light, full view on / off, and at the bottom of the icon to switch to front / rear camera mode. The other facilities are presented on the right side, such as the shutter button and various other modes.

In the Galaxy A6 camera application also has the ability to read certain gestures. For example, if we sweep the finger from the bottom up (landscape position), we can change the rear camera mode to the front camera, and vice versa. Meanwhile, if you access other modes, such as Pro, Panorama, Auto, etc., you can do it by sweeping the screen from left to right.

For the results of the shot itself, the photos taken with the Galaxy A6 camera honestly do not disappoint. Not only sharp, the color of the object being photographed also looks natural. When tested to take pictures in dark areas, the back camera of the Galaxy A6 can also be relied upon. Although the quality is not as good as the results of photographs in areas with bright conditions, with the help of LED Flash in low light conditions, the results of the Galaxy A6 aiming are still relatively good.

To accommodate users who like selfies, the Galaxy A6 is also equipped with a front camera with the same resolution, which is 16 MP (f / 1.9) with a flash LED. When in the Galaxy A6 + we can find the Live Focus feature, in the Galaxy A6 it turns out there is a similar-looking feature called 'Selfie Focus'. With this feature, it is possible to take photos with a blur or blurry background. Not to be missed, besides among the available menus, in the Galaxy A6 camera application there are also interesting facilities called Sticker with a variety of choices and can be chosen as desired or just for fun.

Samsung Exynos 7870 + 3GB RAM

Things that also do not escape and appear to be distinguished between the Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6 + (2018) by the manufacturer include the supporting specifications of its performance. The Galaxy A6 + is known as being supported by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor that has an Octa-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53 configuration and an Adreno 506 graphics processor. The Galaxy A6 is equipped with an octa-core Exynos 7870 processor that offers 1.6 GHz Cortex-A53 speed. For graphics performance, the Galaxy A6 is also supported by GPU Mali-T830 MP1.

Along with that, besides the processor, the RAM capacity of the two also turned out to be different, the Galaxy A6 + embed 4 GB of RAM, while the Galaxy A6 was equipped with 3GB of RAM. As a data storage facility, like the Galaxy A6 +, the Galaxy A6 has only 32GB of internal storage capacity. If it is considered insufficient, we may expand its storage using a microSD card up to 256GB.

Although crammed with support performance specifications that are slightly below the Galaxy A6 +, but in general the performance of the Galaxy A6 also does not disappoint. Such activities as browsing the internet, accessing social networks, to playing games relatively heavy can be enjoyed on the Galaxy A6 smoothly.

Overall based on the benchmark results that Kellytech did, the score obtained by the Galaxy A6 is indeed below the Galaxy A6 +. For example on the AnTuTu benchmark test, the Galaxy A6 has a score of 62725. While the Galaxy A6 + is in the range of 69919.

Likewise on the tests that Kellytech did using the Geekbench 4 application, where the Galaxy A6 scores 729 (single-core) and 3531 (multi-core), while the Galaxy A6 + uses the same application has a slightly higher score, 737 (single- core) and 3614 (multicore).

What about the battery? Here, the Galaxy A6 is powered by a 3000 mAh battery, compared to the 3500 mAh of the Galaxy A6 +. For its own performance, when used to play the Asphalt 8 Airbon game, within one hour, the battery was sucked up by 16%. While when used to do other activities such as watching videos in HD format, at the same time, the battery is drained 9%. Just like the Galaxy A6 +, for the process of charging the battery or transferring data via cable, the Galaxy A6 still adopts a micro-USB port, aka not USB Type C.

Conclusion

Deliberately in the review of Samsung Galaxy A6 (2018), the author compares it more with Galaxy A6 + (2018) than with the nearest competitor of another brand. Though in fact, in terms of price, both the Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6 + (2018) are not competitors for each other. Conversely, the Galaxy A6 (2018), which is sold at Rp. 3.2 million, can actually be an attractive option for those who are reluctant to spend up to IDR 4.8 million to redeem the Galaxy A6 + (2018).

As discussed, these two series A smartphones have many similarities, although there are also a number of distinguishing factors. So, please take the advantage of which of the Galaxy A6 or Galaxy A6 + (2018) you think is suitable and according to taste. Conversely, with the choice of smartphones that are diverse in the market, especially in the Rp3 million price segment, it is quite wise for you to compare Galaxy A6 (2018) with other competing products. Because it could be that the products of other brands are more suitable for your taste and certainly in accordance with the pocket you have.
